1943. Un camp d'entrainement dans le Pacifique. Le sergent Stryker prépare durement une escouade de Marines. Ses hommes supportent difficilement cette rudesse, particulièrement le jeune Conway, fils d'un colonel que Stryker ne cesse de citer en exemple. Mais bientôt les Marines débarquent dans l'île de Tarawa, occupée par les japonais.
